I recently decided it would be fun to have some matchbooks with my information on them, to drop off in various spots and possibly capture the eyes of people who may need a designer at some point in the future. The weather is nice now, and I also needed a reason to get outside.
When I looked at custom matchbox sites, all of the sites I liked had 5,000 minimums, and each matchbox would be about a dollar. Since I wasn’t sure if I’d like them, or enjoy having that many, I decided to make them myself.

I started by buying a box of 100 blank matchboxes online, and cut each one open while watching a few episodes of The Good Wife. I designed and produced a stamp that would fit on the whole side of the boxes.

Once all of the matchboxes were open, I switched to watching Law & Order: SVU and got to stamping. Some were more messed up than others, but I think that contributed to the charm of the project. As long as the important information was legible!

After all of the boxes were stamped and allowed adequate time to dry (no smudgey ink!), I set to glueing them back together (this time while watching Interstellar).

While they dried, I taped ’em to make sure they stayed in place. Some people asked if I was adding gold foil to the boxes, and the answer is, well, no, not yet…

I’m so pumped to see them all completed! Want your own? Subscribe to my newsletter on the right of the page (scroll up) and there’ll be an option to receive a free box soon.
