MSCNE 2014 Lecture—Maps & Infographics

MSCNE 2014 Lecture—Maps & Infographics

This week I dusted off my public speaking pants and went to Athens to talk about my two favorite things: maps & infographics. College news editors from 60 different schools across the US came for a week-long seminar on how to effectively manage their newsrooms, and to stay updated on best practices. I was to give two (2) ninety minute lectures, or, speak for three hours on this topic. Much longer than my 7 minute TEDx talk, but to be fair, that talk was highly manicured and choreographed over several months.

I had so much fun giving these lectures! The students were engaged and interested, and asked a lot of great questions. I asked them to think critically about the graphics presented to them, and make suggestions on fixing poor graphics. My goal was to teach them why we need infographics, and the best way to create them in different environments for different topics.

I put together a slide show for my presentation, and laid hand painted type over the images. I’m not including my whole presentation, just my favorite slides:
