Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum

Atlanta Beltline Arboretum, Summer 2020

Client: Trees Atlanta

Brand Design: Sarah Lawrence

From the BeltLine Website: “The Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum will evolve into a twenty-two mile long horticultural collection. This one-of-a-kind linear expanse provides neighborhood connectivity along the Atlanta BeltLine, while showcasing unique natural characteristics within each community. The Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum is a free and open-to-all green museum. Visit Trees Atlanta calendar of events for walking tour schedule.”

The Arboretum has existed as long as the BeltLine has – originally, the icon was the BeltLine logo at the top of a tree trunk, but I worked with Trees Atlanta to develop a mark that represents the joint partnership between the two organizations.

Everyone wants a puzzle

“It’s something that I’ve been doing for years and years,” YouTuber Karen Kavett says in her video of 10 expert-level tips for doing a jigsaw puzzle. “Look at any poster or image or view through a window and think to yourself, if this was a jigsaw puzzle, how would I go about putting it together?” The rest of the video runs through other practical tips — like sifting new pieces through a colander to remove the puzzle dust, or storing edge pieces in a separate zip-lock bag.”

The exhausting, lucrative world of childhood sleep consulting

“I remember when I reached my breaking point with my son’s sleep. He had faced big changes to his little life over the previous year: an interstate move, a new house, a new preschool, and the arrival of his baby sister. His routines suffered for it, and his bedtime demands had become increasingly baroque and desperate.”

The true cost of being a teacher

“When you walk into a public school classroom, what do you see? Posters on the walls, baskets of scissors and glue sticks and pencils, dry erase markers, copied and stapled worksheet packets, shelves and bins of books, decorations commemorating the seasons, sometimes bean bag chairs or floor pillows, definitely some kind of big rug for the younger grades. There’s often furniture and a mini-fridge, there are tissues and Clorox wipes and sometimes a class pet.”

TARP Open House

The Atlanta Region's Plan, Atlanta Regional Commission, Summer 2019

Client: Atlanta Regional Commission

Writer: Melissa Roberts, Elizabeth Sandlin, & the ARC team

Designer: Sarah Lawrence

Every four years since the 50s, the Atlanta Regional Commission has released a plan to try and account for future technology. In the 1970s, it made arrangements for MARTA. In 1995, it established the Livable Centers Initiative, promoting livable communities. And as we move deeper into the 21st century, there’s a renewed interest in non-car transit, to ease traffic and build a better quality of life.

But how does the ARC engage residents of the Atlanta metro area? A big way is through open houses throughout the region – they educate residents on all of the different facets of transportation planning, how it affects them, and how it’s paid for. They seek feedback from these folks to help hone in on the areas that need the most attention.

I was very excited to work on this project – as an urbanism nerd, I love any chance to learn more about good policies and how they affect every facet of our lives. And as a designer, my dream is to be able to make a lot of different and complex pieces of information fit together for the layman.

For this open house series, we made 12 infographic boards, 2 maps, and 3 Living Infographic boards.

Tacos on Tinder

Why is everyone on Tinder so obsessed with tacos?

“Tacos have only been sold in the United States for about 100 years, when refugees from the Mexican Revolution brought the rolled tortillas with them to the Southwest. In the century since, they’ve become one of America’s favorite food items: Cheap, delicious, and wildly versatile, they’re now widely available everywhere from street corners to fancy restaurants to rural highway rest stops in the form of one of the country’s most popular fast-food chains.”

Who’s making money off moon landing conspiracy theories?, The Goods, Summer 2019

Client: The Goods

Writer: Rebecca Jennings

Illustrator: Sarah Lawrence

“But the moon landing hoax theory has persisted for decades due to the simple fact that if you don’t think about it too hard, it sort of makes sense. The motive is there: The US really wanted to beat the Soviet Union to the moon, and Sputnik forced NASA into action. The technology was there (although this Adam Ruins Everything segment explains why actually, it wasn’t), because 2001: A Space Odyssey had come out a year before and showed realistic footage of a studio-simulated space.”
