This debate frightens me—not just because it will affect every user on the internet, but more because most people don’t know about it. When I first heard the term “net neutrality,” it sounded like some far off distant term that would never affect me. People care most about what affects them, and in this case, what you don’t know will hurt you.
I spent a few weeks working on this graphic to try and elucidate some of the issues, and published it today. I’m both hesitant and excited about opening this conversation up more, because I am, after all, the messenger, not the leader. I didn’t start this battle, but I’m committed to helping. The internet is an exciting, weird, funny, terrible, and innovative place, and all of its quirks and inventions will quickly cease to exist if there isn’t an even playing ground!
