Exploring the Ethnic Neighborhoods of NYC

Ahh, my first map in what feels like ages is finally finished—this one is for our brand new Travel section at Paste, and I’m so thrilled I’ll have a chance to start making maps on maps on maps. I also did the lettering for this one by hand, with some new Illustrator tricks I picked up recently—really had a blast here!

Collaborative Mapping at Root City Market

Last Saturday I got a chance to show my collaborative map at Root City Market, an awesome pop up market every few months in Atlanta (their website is here). Ryan and I showed up at 8:30 AM to get it all set up in the flurry of vendors moving tables and crates and furniture in, and since the map is basically a large puzzle it was quite a challenge to stay out of the way.

MSCNE 2014 Lecture—Maps & Infographics

This week I dusted off my public speaking pants and went to Athens to talk about my two favorite things: maps & infographics. College news editors from 60 different schools across the US came for a week-long seminar on how to effectively manage their newsrooms, and to stay updated on best practices. I was to give two (2) ninety minute lectures, or, speak for three hours on this topic. Much longer than my 7 minute TEDx talk, but to be fair, that talk was highly manicured and choreographed over several months.

#TBT: Early Attempts at Data Visualization

Before I got into collaborative mapping, I was into the idea of neighborhood-specific data visualizations. Atlanta is full of unique and niche neighborhoods, and each of them has its own life and spirit. I wanted to celebrate this by going in depth for each one, and highlighting all of their various characteristics.
